Format and Structure
Test comparison between the Digital SAT and Paper SAT
Testing Format
The digital exam is changing how it’s taken. Instead of using paper, students will now take the test on a computer. This can be a school’s computer or their own. If they don’t have one, the College Board will lend them one when they sign up for the test.
Stage Adaptive
The new computer-adaptive test (CAT) adjusts to fit a student’s skill level. Here’s how it works:
The test has two parts, or modules. In the first module, students answer questions that range from easy to hard. Depending on how they do, the second module will have questions that suit their level.
The second module has two sets of questions: harder and easier. If they do well in the first part, they get the harder questions. If they struggle, they get the easier ones. So, how they do in the first part determines the questions they get in the second part.
