SAT/ ACT/ HSPT/ AP Exam

The Digital SAT is a standardized college admissions exam administered by the College Board. It features two sections (Reading and Writing, Math) with an adaptive module design. The Digital SAT is shorter than the previous paper-based test, taking 2 hours and 14 minutes compared to the paper test’s longer format.

Key Differences from Paper SAT:

  • Duration: 2 hours 14 minutes total (64 minutes for Reading & Writing, 70 minutes for Math)
  • Format: Adaptive – the second module in each section adjusts difficulty based on your first module performance
  • Structure: 54 Reading & Writing questions across 2 modules, 44 Math questions across 2 modules
  • Calculator: Desmos calculator available throughout the Math section
  • Break: 10-minute break between sections

Yes, the Digital SAT uses adaptive testing. This means the difficulty of the second module in each section adjusts based on how you perform in the first module. Strong performance in Module 1 unlocks harder questions with higher scoring potential in Module 2.

How Adaptive Testing Works:

  • Each section (Reading & Writing, Math) has two modules
  • The first module contains a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions
  • Based on your first module performance, the second module becomes either more difficult or less difficult
  • Approximately 60-70% of your score ceiling is determined by first module performance
  • This format allows the test to more precisely measure your ability level

What This Means for Preparation:
Prioritise accuracy in Module 1, as it significantly impacts your overall score potential.

The SAT is scored on a scale of 400-1600, combining scores from two sections: Reading & Writing (200-800) and Math (200-800). A “good” score depends on your target colleges, but competitive schools typically expect scores of 1300 or higher.

SAT Score Ranges:

  • 1400-1600: Competitive for highly selective universities
  • 1300-1390: Strong score for many selective colleges
  • 1200-1290: Above average, suitable for many four-year universities
  • Below 1200: May limit options at more selective institutions

Scoring Context:

  • Total score: 400-1600
  • Section scores: 200-800 each for Reading & Writing and Math
  • Many colleges use “superscoring”, taking your highest section scores from multiple test attempts

The ACT and SAT are both college admissions tests accepted by all U.S. universities, but they differ in structure, timing, and content focus. The ACT includes a Science section, uses a linear format, and requires faster pacing, while the SAT is adaptive, algebra-focused, and allows more time per question.

Which Test Is Right for You?

  • Choose ACT if you: Work quickly under time pressure, excel with data/graphs/charts, are comfortable with geometry and trigonometry, read quickly
  • Choose SAT if you: Prefer more time per question, are stronger in algebra and functions, read more slowly and carefully, perform better with adaptive testing

The ACT includes four main sections: English, Math, Reading, and Science, with an optional Writing section. The test takes 2 hours 45 minutes without Writing, or 3 hours 25 minutes with Writing.

Scoring:

  • Composite score: 1-36 (average of section scores)
  • National average: 19.5-20
  • Competitive colleges expect: 26-31
  • Highly selective schools require: 32-36

The HSPT (High School Placement Test) is a standardized admissions exam used by Catholic high schools to evaluate academic readiness of 8th grade students. Students take the HSPT to qualify for competitive programs, earn merit-based scholarships, and secure placement in advanced classes.

Who Should Take the HSPT:

  • 8th grade students applying to Catholic high schools
  • Students seeking merit-based scholarship opportunities
  • Students aiming for placement in honors or advanced academic tracks

Important Notes:

  • The HSPT is primarily used by Catholic schools
  • Many schools allow only one test attempt per admissions cycle
  • Thorough preparation is essential since retake policies vary by school

The HSPT consists of five sections with 298 total questions, completed in 2 hours 30 minutes. The test is multiple-choice and paper-based, with scores reported as percentile ranks.
