What Is the Digital SAT?

The SAT moved to a fully digital, adaptive format in 2024. If you are new to the current format, start with our complete overview of the Digital SAT before test day. Here is what that means for you.

  • The test is taken on a laptop or tablet using the Bluebook app. Download it before test day.
  • The digital SAT is adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second section adjusts based on your performance in the first. Learn more about how Digital SAT adaptive testing works.
  • The test runs approximately 2 hours and 14 minutes.
  • All preparation should use digital, adaptive practice tests through the Bluebook app. If you are starting from scratch, our complete guide to self-paced SAT prep walks you through how to structure your preparation.

How to Register, What It Costs and What to Do If You Miss the Deadline

Registration is completed online at satsuite.collegeboard.org. Create or log into your College Board account, select your preferred test date and test center, upload a recent passport-style photo, and complete payment.

Registration fees

  • US students: $68
  • International students: $68 + $43 international processing fee = $111 total

Fee waivers are available for eligible 11th and 12th grade students from low-income households. The College Board provides two fee waivers which cover the full registration cost. Ask your school counselor to check your eligibility.

Students needing accommodations or a borrowed device need even more lead time, so registering early is always the better option.

Students who need to borrow a device from the College Board must request one at least 30 days before their test date, earlier than the standard registration deadline.

What Are Testing Accommodations?

Students with documented disabilities may be eligible for accommodations such as extended time, extra breaks, or a separate testing room. Submit your request through your College Board account well before the SAT registration deadline 2026 for your chosen date, as approval can take up to 7 weeks. Once approved, accommodations apply to all future SAT registrations automatically. Contact your school counselor or visit the College Board website for details.

Canceling or Changing Your SAT Date

The College Board does not offer a rescheduling option. To move to a different date you must cancel your current registration and register again, paying the full fee a second time. You can change your test center within the change deadline by paying $34. No changes are allowed after the change deadline.

If you cancel, you receive a refund of your registration fee minus a cancellation fee. The amount refunded depends on when you cancel and which fee you originally paid.

When Should I Take the SAT in 2026?

“When should I take the SAT in 2026?” is the most important question to answer before looking at any test calendar. The right date is not the one that is most convenient. It is the one that fits your college application timeline. Most college application deadlines fall between November and January, so work backwards from those dates factoring in the SAT score release dates for 2026.

Early Decision or Early Action applicants (November 1 deadline)

September 12, 2026 is the safest choice, with scores releasing around September 25. October 3 is also workable, with scores releasing around October 16, but leaves less room if anything goes wrong.

Regular Decision applicants (January 1 deadline)

November 7, 2026 is your best option, with scores releasing around November 20. The December 5 date releases scores around December 18, leaving only two weeks before most January 1 deadlines. Use it only as a last resort.

11th graders taking the SAT for the first time

Aim for May 2 or June 6, 2026. These dates give you real test experience without application pressure and leave the entire fall of 12th grade open for a retake. Take an SAT diagnostic test first to understand your baseline and how much preparation time you need.

Students juggling AP exams

AP exams run from early to mid-May. If your AP schedule is heavy, June 6 may suit you better than May 2 to avoid preparation overlap.

How Many Times Should You Take the SAT?

Most students should plan for at least two attempts. Before committing to a schedule, it helps to have a clear SAT study plan in place so each attempt has a specific goal attached to it.

  • First attempt May or June of 11th grade. Gives you a real baseline score with time to prepare for a retake.
  • Second attempt Fall of 12th grade. August or October works well for most students. Not sure whether a retake makes sense? Read our guide on whether to retake the SAT or ACT before deciding.
  • Third attempt Only if you have a specific score gap, a clear plan, and time before your deadlines. Wait until you have your second score back before scheduling this.

Space your retakes. Taking the SAT on back-to-back months does not give you enough time to address weak areas. Allow at least 6 to 8 weeks between attempts.

A note on superscoring. Many colleges combine your highest Math and highest Reading and Writing scores across different sittings. Not all colleges do this. Verify each school’s policy before building your retake strategy around it.

Why the SAT Matters More in 2026

The test-optional window that defined 2020 to 2022 admissions is closing. MIT reinstated its testing requirement in March 2022, effective for the Class of 2027. Yale, Dartmouth, and Brown followed for the Class of 2029. Harvard then reversed its own commitment to stay test-optional through 2030, reinstating mandatory SAT or ACT scores in April 2024, also effective for the Class of 2029.

Students applying to competitive schools in 2026 and 2027 are doing so in a landscape where a strong SAT score carries real weight again. If you are working on your Math score, our guide on how to score 750+ on SAT Math is a good place to start.

Most US colleges accept scores up to 5 years old, though this varies. Check with your target schools directly to confirm their policy.

Your admission ticket and a valid government-issued photo ID. No pencils or answer sheets are needed as the test is fully digital. If you borrowed a device from College Board, confirm your device details at least one week before test day.

Is the digital SAT easier than the paper SAT?

Not necessarily. The digital SAT is adaptive, meaning difficulty adjusts based on your performance. The College Board designs the scoring to be consistent and fair across all sittings.
